Liverpool have confirmed their retained list ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season

Liverpool have announced that 10 players will leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month but third-choice goalkeeper Adrian has been offered a new deal at the club.

As confirmed last month, Thiago and Joel Matip will leave Merseyside when their contracts come to an end, as the pair were given an Anfield goodbye in the final game of the season against Wolves.

A club statement read: “Liverpool FC has submitted its Premier League retained list following the end of the 2023-24 season, with confirmation of the departure of several senior and Academy players. As announced last month, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are set to leave the Reds upon the expiry of their contracts this summer, following eight and four years respectively with the club.

“Centre-back Matip surpassed 200 appearances during his time on Merseyside, scoring 11 goals and claiming seven honours – including Champions League and Premier League glory. Thiago, meanwhile, featured 98 times after his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2020, the midfielder lifting the Emirates FA Cup and FA Community Shield along the way.”

Academy graduates Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf and Mateusz Musialowski will also move on with academy players Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne and Cody Pennington also released come the end of the month.

Adrian offered new contract

Along with Adrian, academy goalkeepers Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman have been offered new deals by the club. Adrian first joined Liverpool in 2019 and was thrust straight into the spotlight as he saved the vital penalty in the shootout win against Chelsea in the Super Cup. He has played 26 times but has been demoted to third choice with the emergence of Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

The club statement added: “Contract offers have been made to senior goalkeeper Adrian – who has made 26 appearances since signing for the club in August 2019 – and Academy stoppers Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman. Everyone at Liverpool FC thanks Joel, Thiago, Adam, Melkamu, Mateusz, Nathan, Francis, Luke, Niall and Cody for all their contributions and wishes them each the very best for the future.”

The decision to offer Adrian a new deal is the first transfer decision involving new head coach Arne Slot, who began working on Merseyside on June 1. The goalkeeper has not played in the Premier League since the 2020-21 season, with his last appearance coming in the 2022 Community Shield as Liverpool defeated Manchester City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium in Leicester.

Speaking about Adrian in March 2021, ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised the Spaniard’s impact on the dressing room after he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Klopp said: "I'm so happy for him, he deserves that. He showed pure class and top character. He showed all his personality. If you want, he is now number three (goalkeeper) but in the dressing room you will never see any difference. He is just a very strong character and helps the team even when he's not playing. Here he helped on the pitch a lot and I'm really happy for him."
